Official:

Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has completed a free transfer to Bournemouth on a three-year deal.

Defoe is Bournemouth's second signing of the summer, following the arrival of goalkeeper Asmir Begovic from Chelsea. Despite his age, Defoe remains a prolific goalscorer at Premier League level. He is the seventh-highest goalscorer in the history of the division.

The 34-year-old England international, excellent form last season, earned him a recall to Gareth Southgate's side, and he scored his 20th international goal against Lithuania in a World Cup qualifier in March.

Before leaving West Ham for Tottenham, Defoe had a loan spell with Second Division club Bournemouth where he broke the record for getting on the score sheet in a record number of consecutive league games, scoring in 10 games in a row.

His career has since taken him to Tottenham, Portsmouth, Toronto and then Sunderland, where he has recaptured his England place after 15 goals in each of his two full Premier League seasons. He had a clause that would allow him to leave on a free transfer if Sunderland were relegated.

Defoe is still targeting a place at the World Cup next year, with Howe particularly keen this summer to add experience to a squad that still has a strong nucleus of players who have helped establish the club in the Premier League.

Howe is five years older than Defoe and played with him when he was previously at the club as an on-loan teenager. With 154 goals and counting in his Premier League career, Defoe certainly has plenty of experience to draw upon when he comes up against tough defences.

Defoe has regularly been described as one England's best finishers and despite entering the twilight of his career, the 34-year-old's appetite for finding the back of the net is showing no sign of diminishing.
