Mario Balotelli officially signed a new contract

OFFICIAL:

Mario Balotelli has officially signed a new contract to remain at OGC Nice after a successful season in Ligue 1. It was the first time the 26-year-old managed to score an impressive 17 goals in 28 games.

While in true Balotelli fashion, he once again carried on his bad boy reputation. He was sent off a whopping three times in his debut season in France, as well as being booked five times as his side finished in third place – 17 points behind champions Monaco.

The Italian international had arrived on a free transfer from Liverpool last summer and panned a one-year deal. It proved a boost to his career prospects and confidence when helping Nice secure a place in qualifying for next season's Champions League.

The length of the contract remains a mystery as Nice didn't reveal how many years will run on Balotelli's new deal, however his salary is believed to have decreased to make him more affordable for the club.

Mario Barwuah Balotelli or Super Mario will return to first-team training on Monday as the French side gear up for their Champions League qualifiers next month. Nice have qualified for the tournament for the first time. OGC Nice will join Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain as France's representatives.

Observant viewers will have noticed something different about Balotelli. Specifically, that the number 45 wasn’t on the back of his shirt. The 26-year-old has worn 45 at every club he’s played for. After signing for Liverpool in 2014, he explained exactly why.

“I took No 45 because I was joking that four plus five is nine - and I scored in all four games. It brings me luck and that's why I've always kept No 45.”he told Liverpool’s official website.

According to Article 564 of the Ligue 1 and 2 regulations, the highest number allowed is 30 because squads must not exceed 30 players. That meant he wasn’t allowed to wear 45. The Italian international was made his first match for Nice wearing the shirt with number 9 and scored twice on his debut to help Nice past Marseille.

Keeping him was a great deal for OGC Nice, there is no denying he is a lethal striker when focused and motivated. He combines pace and power with underrated technique and a considerable aerial threat.
